he problem, in its basic form, is this: You want to choose something
that will give you a good chance of looking festive—that is, of looking
somehow different from the way you look on a normal office day. But by
the same token, you don’t want to go too far the other way and look much
more festive than everyone else. To be super festive when your
compatriots are simply looking more relaxed is to stick out like a sore
thumb.
Every office has a hierarchy, and you have to maintain your place
within that hierarchy even when everyone is letting their hair down for
the office party. If you are a manager or supervisor, for instance, you
cannot be seen unbending too much, or you will risk losing some of the
respect of your staff. That said, it doesn’t do for you to be too
uptight either, or your staff will fail to warm to you.
